M.Litt. in English Language and Linguistics

Discourse Analysis

This module introduces different approaches and techniques for exploring and analysing spoken and written texts. The module introduces students to a range of analytical approaches including conversation analysis, pragmatics, critical discourse analysis (using systemic functional grammar) and genre analysis.

We engage with hands-on analysis of language in use from a range of different contexts and genres (from educational contexts to casual conversation to news media and advertising) in order to explore the workings of discourse and its range of interpersonal and ideological functions.

Students choosing Discourse Analysis might also wish to study Sociolinguistics and Varieties of English.

This module will no longer be available after 2015. Module convenor: Bethan Benwell.
