M.Litt. in English Language and Linguistics

Old and Middle

This module offers an advanced linguistic introduction to Old and Middle English. Emphasis is placed on close analysis of the structural, lexical and phonemic features that characterise these historical varieties of English, and upon the linguistic changes that separate them.  At the same time, students are invited to consider some of the ideological correlates of observed changes in medieval English, together with relevant models of historical change.

Where possible, the broader Germanic context of specific linguistic features and changes are taken into account. The module offers students the opportunity to apply some of the principles they will be exploring in Structures of Language to concrete historical data, and also serves as  valuable preparation for the Historical Linguistics and the History of English option in the spring semester.

Available as an option module in Autumn 2014. Module convenor: Stephen Penn.
